This season, I decided that I would use all that I had learned in my endless battles with Photoshop, and try to come up with my very own card at Christmastime. My daughter Chloe, who graciously consented to be a model with her favorite cat, Hershey Bar, enthusiastically helped me set up my new collapsible background, reflector, and stands for each. She then helped me troubleshoot where it would be best to position the reflector, and which of its 5 sides would be most likely to give the best outcome. We also brainstormed about where exactly in our long, east-facing living room we would be able to catch the most light from outdoors. Chloe hates it when I use my flash because she is so light sensitive, so we only used ambient light. I then processed and printed each card on my home printer which was another challenge. But all in all, it was a fun mother-daughter project, and a wonderful memory.

Thank you! She loves anything technical and/or creative, so this was right up her alley. Oh, and she loves to “direct” the action, so the set up was fun for her π

This came out so nice! I can’t believe you were able to get such wonderful results using just ambient light. Your model is adorable!

Thanks so much, Michelle! I have been really enjoying doing my latest portrait work using only ambient light. It works great playing around with a reflector attached to a stand and positioning it closer or further away from the model for the look I am going after. I recommend giving it a try!
